“Instead of better glasses, your networks give you better eyes.” Ronald Burt, American Sociologist

CEO Update
‘Tis the season, and it seems like a lot of our focus at the Chamber has been on our retail, tourism and hospitality members as we gear up for the silly season.

We are acutely aware though that the greater Fremantle region, and our membership base, includes an incredible diversity of businesses. From large seafood, wool and wine companies whose documents we are madly stamping as they race to get their products into overseas markets at the moment, to marine and industrial services companies looking at new opportunities, to an array of professional services right through to our technology creative industries sector gearing up for events like Start up Fest. It is such a busy time of year for everyone.

One thing we all have in common is the unique opportunity this time of year provides to reconnect and build our networks – no matter what industry we are in.

They say networking is more about farming than harvesting and there is no better time to pick one or two events or activities and get out there. Referrals don’t come our way if we sit in our offices and expect the phone to ring. They come to those who refer others, those who are interested in others and those who leave a positive impression.

Some top tips from the experts on building strong networks include:

  • Keep your networks fresh and up to date
  • Put yourself in the right location or situation
  • Take the opportunity to learn, especially if you are fortunate enough to be around interesting people who do something different from you
  • Focus on building a relationship, not on talking about yourself
  • Think of how you can add value to every relationship in every encounter
  • Take the time to follow up

What better way than start to implement these tips, then starting with fresh eyes on what we all have in common, doing business in Fremantle!

So let’s start learning and promoting the benefits of Port city, find new ways to refer each other and enjoy the benefit of our diverse business network.

I encourage you to take the time to walk alongside a new business leader as you join us on tour to explore what Fremantle looks like from the Inside on Sunday, 1 December 2019. The tours are FREE to members and designed for your management teams, your staff, your families and your clients.

Supported by the City of Fremantle and Fremantle Tours, this will be a local famil tour with a difference – a special curated tour of the best our Port City has to offer! Find new places to refer your customers, share the love and learn about the nooks and crannies that give this rakish community its spirit and soul. Register for one of the four tours across the day here. There is even a youth one designed to prepare your young folk on how to keep busy over the holidays.

Then head up for a celebration at the George St Festival at one of our most special neighbourhoods that we couldn’t fit on the walking tour!

Most importantly, while you are booking in your tour online, don’t forget to book into next week’s Set the Month in Motion Building Capacity Forum, with more tips on how to grow your business through innovative sales and networking techniques. These podcast forums are growing in strength each month and places are LIMITED so get in quick to snap up your seat.

It is going to a be a huge week of events here at the Chamber, finishing with the Special Meeting followed by the Chamber Christmas Function next Thursday.

I hope to report on the new contacts I have made over the next week, and I trust you can all do the same.
