“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did” Newt Gingrich, Politican

Things are tough out there, and we hear you. It doesn’t matter whether you are in retail, hospitality, property, construction, trades, marine or the creative industries, everyone is feeling it at the moment.

Seeing empty desks, empty chairs and empty sites while absenteeism due to COVID and close contacts take hold, seeing the City so quiet as people try to avoid joining Club COVID, seeing businesses lose millions of dollars each day due to supply chain challenges and just not having the stock, equipment or packaging they need to deliver to their customers and not really knowing after 2 years if there is any light at the end of the tunnel is taking its toll.

We will share the full results of the Chamber’s Member Survey next week but the results we have seen are pointing to a kind of exhaustion with the ongoing challenges of doing business in these times. That said, there is a significant amount of optimism for Fremantle and its future which is reassuring. We will continue to work to help realise these opportunities.  I guess we all just need to keep that end in mind and keep persevering through the slog at the moment (and taking a moment to play and breathe where we can). If you haven’t done so already please do complete the survey here so we can finalise the analyse and prepare some positions to share with our stakeholders. The survey closes COB tomorrow.

On opportunities we have had some wins this week around our partnership with the Blue Gravity Project (see the podcast below), some traction on aligning the stakeholders around strategic transport planning for the region and media interest on policy to address skills shortages and commercial office spaces in Fremantle.

We are also contributing the City of Fremantle’s Destination Marketing Working Groups new “This is Fremantle” Campaign for 2022 (being crafted by the amazing team at Chamber Member &Partners) and the Wild Freo – Street Arts Festival Team’s latest initiative. These campaigns couldn’t come at a better time and we will cover more in next week’s Chamber Weekly. We cannot wait to see the streets more active and alive over Easter! Our businesses desperately need this support.

We also will be announcing an exciting partnership between the University of Notre Dame’s Student Life and Student body teams and our local businesses. Stay tuned next week for this media and announcement.

Finally it is with pleasure that I welcome a number of new members into the Chamber fold. Please check them out below and support their businesses where you can. We will be kicking events off again at the end of May so that will be a great chance to get out and start networking again to help us all support each other.

Take care
