Building an iconic brand, product, business or even image, requires boldness and a willingness to swim against the tide and step outside one’s comfort zone – all the while looking fabulous!!

Fremantle is an iconic Port City that sums up this boldness and it has done since the late 1800s – larger than life, somewhat gritty at times but mesmerisingly timeless always. The big question is now how do we continue that into our future.

It has been such an exciting week as we launched the Fremantle Business Awards call for nominations, welcomed the Minister’s announcement of a strategic planning initiative for Fremantle’s Future, saw a raft of incredible Fremantle Architects take out the WA Architecture Awards and attended the launch of Australia’s Trade and Diplomatic push to this year’s chosen country through Australia Now Malaysia.

Themes of Taste & Technology, People & Culture and Creative Industries in Australia now Malaysia fit so well with our own local strengths of an incredible and diverse hospitality sector, local producers of seafood, spices and flavours, augmented reality and technology driven businesses and our creative industries – all developed on a platform of local music artists, visual artists and physically amazing spaces.

The search is on for our best businesses that reflect these values. I can’t wait to see what we uncover in the list of nominations this year. It will be hard to beat the diversity and iconic list of Fremantle brands across the Winner’s Circle of last year! However it is up to you to find them so NOMINATE NOW!

I was reminded of what defines an icon that formed the discussion of one of our early Set the Month in Motion Podcasts where we explored developing a product, getting it to market and the most important question to answer what business are you actually in. There are lots of lessons here in understanding our core strengths and how they meet a market need and it is then, and only then that we can aim for iconic status. For those in need of a more tangible experience of what we mean, why not head down to our iconic Chamber member @clancysfremantle where the unassuming, but ridiculously talented, Helen Shanahan (pictured above) is playing as part of ‘Writers Block’. There are 6 songwriters on the stage at once, and they will take it in turns to sing a song relating to the theme of “weather and seasons”. It kicks off from 7.30pm, with tickets $10 from @oztix. I can’t think of a better fusion of heritage spaces, live music, tasty local products, and creative talent.
