“It is always good to remember where you have come from and to celebrate it, to remember where you have come from is part of where you are going .” Anthony Burgess Author

Is anyone as surprised as I am that we are suddenly just a few short weeks away from Christmas?? After a Winter that felt like it was never going to end, we seem to have arrived at this point of the year very abruptly.

I read with interest Chamber Member Meena Silk’s post on LinkedIn this week about flexibility with festive season holidays that better reflects the diversity of our community. I do love Christmas but I am often reminded by many that this is a particularly European custom and not always relevant to our whole community.  I so agree with Meena that we need more flexibility around official holiday celebrations for individuals and remembering our cultures, where we have come from and where we are going into the future.

However, regardless of the title, the festive season to me means a welcome stop in time, a time where it is okay to celebrate, to take a breathe, to celebrate our incredible summer lifestyle, magic lights, family, festive food gatherings and truly remember the important people in our lives. I hope that while this Chamber Weekly focuses on a range of activities that we call Christmas, its intent is to light up and shine the light on Fremantle across the festive season – however you celebrate and whatever day marks this festive time of year for you, and your culture.

We have an incredible Chamber member gift guide in this edition (I think I personally want all 20 items on the list below if anyone wants to share it with my family!!), as well as all the details on our Chamber push to show what our community can do to bring our City alive this Festive season.

We may not have the million dollar budget of the City of Perth’s Light Trail but we have the most creative, passionate talent in the world right here in our City. I remember so vividly as a kid heading to town for Christmas to see the lights of the shop windows, the small trains going around packed with presents, a tiny rocking santa in a chair and so many tiny lights that made you want to peer inside to see what magic was in there. This is what we are aiming to create this festive season, but we need your help! Thanks to the City of Fremantle there is $5,000 up for grabs, chosen by public vote. Get behind it and shine a light on your business this Christmas!. Register NOW at our website.

Also a reminder to register for our last Business After Hours for the year at Fremantle Sailing Club on Nov 25th, and also get in early for our Christmas party before tickets sell out.  Tickets are available here.
