Since July 2019, The Water Corporation has been proactively replacing ageing water mains across metropolitan Perth to prevent future leaks and breaks.

This has had significant negative economic impacts on the local businesses of Subiaco, Leederville, Victoria Park and Highgate.

We understand the work needs to be done, but we also are working to ensure the Water Corporation understands the diversity and unique nature of Fremantle business and plans accordingly.

The Water Corporation are a week away from appointing a contractor and following our feedback have agreed to split the works to cover two winters, rather than edge into the summer season.

The High St traders pushed for a briefing by the Water Corporation which took place on 7 June 2019 at the City of Fremantle. Their request is to the delay the works on High St until Winter 2020 to allow for time to prepare for the cost, order stock appropriately and get through the 10 nights in Port and other activations planned for this year.

We voiced concerns that the diversity of businesses in pockets of Fremantle didn’t seem to be taken into consideration, and that engagement with these stakeholders had yet to take place.

The Water Corporation followed up to request comment on that diversity of members and differing needs. We are looking to make a recommendation on street scheduling and cluster groups of businesses for further consultation, as well as request a further meeting with the appointed contractor. We believe it is essential to continue to be involved in the conversations around mitigation of impacts including visual, environmental, traffic management and timing.

We encourage all businesses to complete the works schedule timing survey here.

We are also seeking comment on the following proposed schedule of works, see rough initial proposed schedule below:

Winter 2019 – Essex St, Essex Ln, Collie St, Marine Tce & Market St

Winter 2020 – High St, Pakenham St, Leake St, Cantonment St, Nairn St & South Tce

We are also seeking expressions of interest for businesses in the following clusters to form part of a discussion with the Water Corporation over the coming fortnight. Please email your feedback, relevant business cluster, location and desire to be involved in the discussion groups to by COB Wednesday 19 June 2019.
