“We are not sea people by way of being great mariners, but more of a coastal people, content on the edge of things. ….There is more bounty, more possibility for us in a vista that moves, rolls, surges, twists, rears up and changes from minute to minute. The innate human feeling from the veranda is that if you look out to sea long enough, something will turn up…” Tim Winton, Author

I used this quote in a video used to showcase the panellists at the upcoming State of the Blue Economy Forum (which you can view here)

I think as 2020 draws to a close, Fremantle is definitely sitting on the veranda, looking out to sea and wondering what the future will bring.

The Fremantle Business Awards 2020 winners and finalists from Friday night, and feedback from the National Exporters Awards, are showing that it is our small and medium size businesses that have shone through COVID-19. Their risk taking, creativity and adaptability has paid off and their wins are definitely worth celebrating.

Companies like Chamber Members South Beach Boardies (pictured above) are re-assuring us that the future is bright, if a little different from what we expected looking out over the veranda 12 months ago.

Our link to our coastal life and its protection was a theme running through many of our applicant businesses this year.

A full list of finalists and winners, including a media release with the judges comments is available here. We will also be emailing all winners and finalists with their individual judges comments and requesting your feedback on our annual awards early next week. Stay tuned for the release of the amazing awards video too.

A quiet but hugely significant win came this week via the City of Fremantle Council meeting that ruled in favour of supporting our local businesses and procurement (a big thank you to Councillor Mofflin for championing this advocacy drive!) I have detailed more of this in our leadership section below.

There is a lot to celebrate as we start December, and lots of conversations happening over the next week – from the State of the Blue Economy to Freo Start Up Fest to our next Set the Month in Motion Forum our Chamber Christmas Party – so gather the troops and lets see what a look out over the veranda brings.
