Fremantle’s Biggest Sailing Event Since America’s Cup

Fremantle to host first stop of international, world-famous SailGP Championship.

Western Australia will set the stage for an iconic global sail racing competition next year, when the Perth Sail Grand Prix comes to Fremantle.

SailGP is one of the world's most fast-paced and prestigious sailing events, featuring 50-foot catamarans raced by teams from 12 nations at speeds of over 100 kilometres per hour in close proximity to the shoreline.

The annual global championship takes place in major cities across the world, including New York, Saint Tropez and Abu Dhabi, and in January 2026, will add Fremantle to the lineup as the first stop on the event's tour.

SailGP is anticipated to attract thousands of international tourists to WA which will be great for Fremantle and help diversify Western Australia's economy.

The event is also expected to generate enormous global media coverage showcasing Perth and Fremantle, with the 2025 Sail Grand Prix | Sydney attracting a record 21.1 million dedicated viewers from across the world, and SailGP and its competing teams boasting more than four million followers across their social media platforms.

Set to take place over two days, the Perth Sail Grand Prix will include a minimum of three 15-minute races per day that will culminate in a final showdown between the three highest-scoring teams, with a total of USD $12.8 million across the 2026 SailGP Championship on the line in prize money.

Spectators will be able to view the event from a purpose-built grandstand, in what will be an Australian-first for SailGP.

The event will return to WA in 2027 and 2028 as part of a three-year deal, with a range of ticketed options, on land and on water, to be revealed in the coming months, adding to Perth's growing annual calendar of events.

A fan experience program will also take place alongside the event, with prize giveaways, roaming music and entertainment, special FX, fan cams and a race stadium DJ, creating a lively festival atmosphere for spectators.
