Public comment on the Fremantle Traffic Bridge Closes Thursday 1 February

Community and stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the proposed concept that has been submitted for Development Approval before this Thursday 1 February 2024.

The new concept responds to community and key stakeholder feedback to the concept released in 2022, and previous consultation since 2019.

The Development Application proposes replacing the existing Fremantle Traffic Bridge with a new iconic bridge as part of the Swan River Crossings Project. The new bridge will be built on the existing traffic bridge alignment maintaining two traffic lanes in each direction. New wider and safer paths will be built on both sides of the new bridge, and navigational clearances for boats and river users will be improved.

Key features of the new bridge include:

  • Two traffic lanes in each direction for road users

  • Ties into existing Queen Victoria Street at the northern end and Canning highway intersection to the south.

  • Wider and safer pedestrian and cyclist paths on each side of the bridge (up to 4m wide).

  • Minimises impact to the limestone enscarpment.

  • Improves navagational safety for boats, kayaks and river users with higher and wider clearances (up to 9m).

  • Provides space for any future rail bridges west of the new bridge.
